Everything from the old school grindhouse packaging to the clean shots looked like the choices of a seasoned professional. Add to that a wonderful atmosphere that fills every frame of this back to basics slasher flick, providing any self respecting horror fan with the necessary nourishment required for a diet of blood and gore and you've got top notch horror flick. The story is a pretty simple one, a handful of raging hormones head out to a really nice cabin in the woods in hopes to sleep all day and party all night long. Only once they get there, Stevie, a psycho killer with sex issues starts killing them off one by one (Jason style). Stevie is an interesting antagonist that proudly kills without a mask, but is calm and calculated like all of the best masked killers from the glory days of the slasher film. He walks around with the confidence of someone that has killed many times before, but also has an adolescent innocence that makes it difficult to not root for him. And isn't that what makes a great horror icon? There are lots of reasons Murder loves killers is a great directorial debut; there's just the right amount of suspense, a little nudity, hot girls, good gore gags, a decent plot, and an awesome bad guy. Barnhardt brought together a strong cast that had acting skills, and built a bad guy with a unique personality. Actress Mary LeGault was great as the bad girl with great tits, and Scott Christian also did a fine job as her tough guy boyfriend, but Allen Andrews stole the show as Stevie the killer that gets off on gore. Overall the cast was strong for a low budget horror romp, and that tells me Mr. Barnhardt has his shit together. The photography was also extremely impressive, adding a late 70s' feel to the whole production. The tone of the flick was reminiscent of the first "Friday the 13th" movie and the cast had a spur of the moment charm that is missing from lots of todays flashy Hollywood slasher garbage. "Murder Loves Killers Too" is a slasher flick that wears its influences on its sleeve, a pure horror film made by filmmakers that obviously love the genre. If your a fan of old school horror, then do yourself a favor and check this flick out any way you can. Movies like this are the reason I'm a horror fan, and it puts a huge smile on my face to know that there are filmmakers out there that still love real horror, old school horror with characters that get drunk and naked, and killers that are hard to forget.
